Despite their clear intentions, it has been a quiet summer transfer window for Manchester City so far. City are in the market for some big fish as they eye improvements ahead of the 2021/22 season, but are yet to land any of their targets, with Scott Carson their only permanent signing so far.

“Having won the league, it is not the time to sit back and be content,” said City chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak in June.

“That would be your biggest mistake. This is the time to send a strong message that there is no contentment, that you are not satisfied with just winning the league.”

That statement of intent is yet to come from Pep Guardiola’s side, but that is not for a lack of trying.

With three weeks until the start of the Premier League season on August 13 and five weeks left until the transfer deadline on August 31, there is no time like the present for City.

Here are the deals that could happen in the coming weeks.

Three players City could sign

City’s main need in this transfer window is glaringly obvious. They lost club legend Sergio Aguero on a free transfer to Barcelona and desperately need a replacement striker.

Gabriel Jesus is the only senior central forward at the club at the moment but that is unlikely to be the case come August 31.

Harry Kane is the number one target. City have already seen a £100million bid turned down by Tottenham and Daniel Levy is reportedly determined to hold onto his most prized asset.

Kane has three years remaining on his Spurs contract but is understood to be ready to push for a transfer to City, who are yet to concede defeat.

Seven players Tottenham could sign and seven they could sell

City are so keen on Kane that they are ready to include a high-profile first-team player as part of their next bid. This saga looks set to rumble on and on.

The next major deal City are considering is for Jack Grealish, who they are also prepared to shell out £100m for, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Grealish signed a new five-year £140,000 per week deal with Aston Villa in September and won’t be a straightforward signing.

Both of those targets have a high degree of difficulty attached to them, but one more attainable player is available: Danny Ings.

Ings has entered the final year of his contract and recently rejected the offer of a new deal with Southampton which would have made him the highest paid player in the club’s history.

The feeling is Ings is holding out for offers this summer and, if City don’t land Kane, he could just be in luck.

Other likely departures are Yangel Herrera and Daniel Arzani.

Herrera joined City in 2017 but is yet to make a single appearance for the club. He has spent time on loan with New York City, Huesca and Granada and has done enough to attract transfer interest.

Atletico Madrid have been linked with the 23-year-old midfielder, while West Ham, Crystal Palace, Leeds and Southampton are also interested after his form for Granada.

Another forgotten loanee is Arzani, who joined City from feeder club Melbourne City in 2018 and has been on loan with Celtic, Utrecht and AGF Aarhus.

The 22-year-old has struggled with injuries and is currently away with Australia at the Olympic Games. He was retained by City this summer and is surely set for another loan spell.
