Southampton ‘agree deal’ to hand Luton boss Nathan Jones his first Prem job

Southampton have reportedly agreed a deal for Luton boss Nathan Jones to become their new manager.

The Saints job became available after they sacked Ralph Hasenhuttl on Monday. Hasenhuttl survived two 9-0 drubbings as Saints boss, but the final straw came yesterday after the club lost 4-1 to Newcastle, leaving them in 18th place in the Premier League.

Hasenhuttl's now the fifth Prem manager to get sacked this season. He was preceded by ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, former Bournemouth manager Scott Parker, Bruno Lage, who was dismissed by Wolves, and most recently, Aston Villa replaced Steven Gerrard with Unai Emery.

And the Saints have turned to Jones in order to turn things around at the club. The 49-year-old has been given the go ahead to make the switch by Luton who have worked out an undisclosed compensation package with Southampton, according to the Daily Mail.

This means the Welshman could be in charge for the club for their next Premier League match against Liverpool on Saturday. But it will be a daunting challenge for the former Brighton star who's never managed in the top flight division.

Jones made his managerial bones with Luton in 2016, before heading for an ill-fated spell at Stoke City in 2019 where he was sacked after winning just two of his first 14 matches in charge.

However, Luton welcomed him back despite his poor record, and he's been at the helm ever since.

Although he's not the big name Saints fans may have wanted, Jones could be the ideal man to reverse the club's fortune if he's no-nonsense tactics are anything to go by. The ruthless enforcer once set a pool table on fire as it kept making his players late for training.
