Graeme Souness says Gareth Southgate shouldn’t be scared of Kylian Mbappe and claims that France will struggle to succeed at the 2022 World Cup unless they ‘gel and come together’.

France get their World Cup campaign off to a flying start with a 4-1 win over Australia. Didier Deschamps’s men are hoping to make it two wins from two as they take on Denmark this afternoon.

If England win Group B – and subsequently get past the challenge of the Group A runner-up – they will play the winner of the last-16 clash between the Group D winner and the Group C runner-up. That would make France England’s most likely quarter-final opponents.

Fans are not so optimistic about England’s chances as France are the current world champions – having won the 20218 World Cup in Russia. France also beat England on penalties to win Euro 2020.

Souness says the Three Lions should not be scared. He told ITV: ‘I know they’re the current world champions but when I look at them on paper, I wouldn’t be fussed. If I was Gareth Southgate I’m not frightened of that French team.’

Laura Woods interjected and questioned Souness. She said: ‘Not even Mbappe?’ with a rather surprised look on her face.

Souness replied saying: ‘Yeah, I’d be frightened of him [Mbappe] one on one he’s gonna run past anybody.’

Ian Wright agreed with the 69-year-old. He said: ‘I’d be probably frightened of him [Mbappe] with the way we played last night!’.

Before Souness added: ‘But I don’t think on paper anyway unless they gel and they all come together and they play out of their skins, I’m looking at the midfield, I’m looking at the other ones who are looking to be creative, they wouldn’t frighten me.’
