Son Heung-min reduced to tears as Tottenham’s wait for silverware goes on

Son Heung-min was reduced to tears at the final whistle at Wembley Stadium on Sunday as Tottenham's wait for silverware continued.

The South Korean forward and his teammates were on the losing side as Aymeric Laporte's late header ensured Manchester City won their fourth Carabao Cup in a row.

Son, 28, is yet to win a major honour at Spurs since joining six years ago and was consoled by several City players at full-time.

Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden and Ilkay Gundogan were among the players to put an arm round the Spurs star but it will have done little to ease his heartbreak at another near miss.

Son was part of the Tottenham squad which fell short in the Champions League final two years ago and their hopes of landing a first trophy for the club since 2008 were dashed by Laporte's goal in the 82nd minute.

Laporte should arguably not even have been on the pitch, having avoided a booking for a clear foul on Lucas Moura in the first half before referee Paul Tierney brandished a yellow card to the defender for a carbon copy incident moments later.

City dominated proceedings throughout but struggled to find a breakthrough until Laporte beat Moussa Sissoko to head home De Bruyne's free-kick.

Pep Guardiola's side had the ball in the net again with minutes to spare after Riyad Mahrez tucked home Phil Foden's cross, only for the goal to be disallowed for an earlier offside.

Tottenham's preparations were no doubt disrupted by the sacking of Jose Mourinho on Monday with 29-year-old coach Ryan Mason taking charge of only his second game.

Harry Kane had recovered from injury to start the fixture but failed to make a real impact as Spurs were overrun by the quality of their opponents in front of a crowd of 8,000, as fans were allowed back into stadiums for the first time after the pandemic.

Asked whether the fans made a difference to the victory, Guardiola said: "It's much better. There was good noise and we can celebrate with them. We played really well, incredible."
