Sol Campbell in the running to replace Mark Warburton as QPR manager

Sol Campbell ’emerges as a leading contender to succeed Mark Warburton at QPR’… with the Championship club also considering former Tottenham and Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood for the managerial vacancy

  • QPR are looking for their next manager after allowing Mark Warburton to leave
  • Sol Campbell is reportedly the favourite for the vacant position at the club
  • The former England defender has not been in the dugout since June 2020
  • Tim Sherwood is also in the running for the manager’s hotseat at QPR

Sol Campbell is a leading candidate to become QPR’s next manager, according to reports.

The Championship club announced last month that Mark Warburton would be leaving the club at the end of the season, and they are now looking for his successor.

Campbell is believed to be the favourite for the role, and is due to be interviewed shortly, according to talkSPORT.

Tim Sherwood is also in the running for the managerial position at the west London club

He faces competition from former team-mate Tim Sherwood, who has coached in the top flight at Tottenham and Aston Villa.

The west London club have already spoken to MK Dons boss Liam Manning and Newport County’s James Rowberry as well.

However, it is understood that Campbell has the edge over the other contenders, as things stand.

This would be the most high-profile job of Campbell’s coaching career if he is given the green light to take over at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

He has previously managed Macclesfield Town and Southend United in League Two, but has been away from the dugout for almost two years after leaving the latter position in June 2020.

The former Tottenham and Arsenal defender spent some time with Patrick Vieira at Crystal Palace at the back end of 2021 as he set his sights on returning to management.

Campbell played alongside QPR director of football Les Ferdinand for Tottenham and England

He could now be closing in on his next role on the touchline.

Campbell’s relationship with QPR director of football Les Ferdinand may also help his cause.

The pair featured in the same team at club and international level during their playing days.

Meanwhile, Campbell is no stranger to QPR, having previously trained the club’s youth teams when working towards collecting his coaching badges.
