Sir Alex Ferguson’s 2013 Phil Jones prediction went horribly wrong at Man Utd

Sir Alex Ferguson's prediction about Phil Jones back in 2013 has turned out to be horribly wrong for the Manchester United legend.

Ferguson signed Jones from Blackburn back in 2011 after he broke through with Rovers while they were still in the Premier League.

At the time, the versatile defender was earning all sorts of praise, with then-England manager Fabio Capello comparing Jones to former A.C. Milan and Italy captain Franco Baresi, as well as former Real Madrid and Spain captain Fernando Hierro.

However, Fergie’s prediction went above and beyond Capello’s praise, with the Scot backing him to become United’s best player ever.

He said: "Jones, arguably the way he is looking, could be our best ever player.

“I think Jones may be one of the best players we have ever had, not matter where we play him.

“At 21 years of age, he is going to be a phenomenal player. I think he can play anywhere on the pitch.

"He has such a massive influence, with his instinct and reading of the game. He has a drive about him."

Jones is now into his 10th season at United, and things have gone from bad to worse for the 29-year-old in recent years.

Injury has ruled him out entirely in this campaign, while he made just two Premier League appearances last season.

Despite being at United such a long time, he has never actually managed to tie down a regular starting spot, apart from his debut season.
