Former England international Trevor Sinclair says that Manchester City should not sign Neymar if given the chance – as he would be a downgrade from Raheem Sterling.

The Citizens parted ways with Sterling earlier this month as he completed a £50million move to Chelsea where he penned a five-year deal worth more than £300,000-a-week.

With rumours emerging this week that Pep Guardiola was interested in the PSG star as a replacement for Sterling, Sinclair has insisted that Neymar is too inconsistent for the Premier League.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Sinclair claimed: ‘He’s [Neymar] too inconsistent for me. You get one good game out of every four.

‘I compared him with Sterling and a lot of people got on my back, but if you’re a manager you’d want Sterling over Neymar! Three games out of four Raheem is top drawer. He might have the odd bad game but with Neymar you’re not getting that consistency.’

Speculation over the Brazilian’s future has been rife this summer after club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi refused to rule out offloading the 30-year-old.

City have already made a number of big signings this summer, such as Erling Haaland and Kalvin Phillips, but that hasn’t stopped them from continuing to be linked with the Brazilian.

Neymar has had an up and down five years with PSG since his world record transfer and was even booed by his own fans following another disastrous Champions League exit last season.

The former Barcelona star is currently in training with PSG and played the second half of their 2-1 win against Japanese side Kawasaki Frontale on Wednesday.
