Barcelona legend Samuel Eto’o delivered a scathing verdict of Cameroon’s performance in their 1-0 African Cup of Nations qualifying win over Burundi.

Lyon star Karl Toko Ekambi scored the only goal of the game in a slender victory in their opening match of the qualifying campaign.

A video has gone viral though of Eto’o, now the president of the country’s FA, ripping into the team’s performance and urging them to do more ahead of their participation in the World Cup this year.

Cameroon beat Burundi 1-0 in a closely fought African Cup of Nations qualifying match

Samuel Eto’o delivered a furious rant to the players after the match saying they won’t make the team to play in the World Cup if they deliver similar performances going forward

He said: ‘I am not happy. I’m not happy at all. You represent the Cameroonian national team. I don’t care who is in front of you, you need to get the job done.

‘I cried for years because I had bad World Cups. But I knew what problem I had and why I had bad World Cups. And that is not going to happen as long as I am president. I accepted the presidency to change things and spots on this squad will be expensive.

‘Nobody is guaranteed a place in this squad. You have to do your job. If you want to come and put the Cameroonian shirt on you have to do your job.

Eto’o, the president of the Cameroon Football Federation spoke of the importance of playing for the national team and said not one player is guaranteed to be in this squad

‘Otherwise don’t bother to come and I’ll be happy. I will be happy to have the children play.’

As a player, Eto’o featured in three World Cups but never made it past the group stages.

Cameroon are in a group with Brazil, Switzerland and Serbia at this year’s tournament which kicks off in November.

Eto’o said if players replicate their performances against Burundi, they won’t make the World Cup squad.

He said: ‘I was sat there at 26 years just like you and I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking ‘this guy is a b******’ but I was the best sitting there.

‘And I know why I missed out but today I’m the president. I’ll give anything for you to be in the best conditions, even my life.

‘I will fight with everyone for you guys to be in the best possible conditions. Because you’re all sitting there not knowing what kind of fights I’ve got behind the scenes to put you in the best of conditions.

‘But when we come here it’s Cameroon boys. For me there’s nothing more beautiful than Cameroon. There’s nothing more important.

‘I would give my life for my country. There’s nothing more beautiful. I have a very high estimate of my country. And I’m going to get where I want to be with or without you.

Eto’o had a legendary playing career with notable stints at Barcelona and Inter Milan

Eto’o was appointed as the Cameroon Football Federation’s president back in December

‘If you want to be part of this journey, I suggest you get moving boys I’m telling you because for this World Cup, do not be sure to be on this list.

‘Based on what I saw today? You won’t be. I need more boys. Because I’m dreaming of winning this World Cup.

‘And all the problems I encountered as a player will not occur again. And my first choice will be to have a good humanly group.

‘I had bad World Cups as I wasn’t part of a humanly good group. But I had big players, very good players believe me. I had incredible teams but they weren’t humanly good.

‘So my first challenge will be to create a group that is happy to live together. From this moment this group will be able to live together. We will win boys.’

Eto’o is Cameroon’s leading goalscorer of all time with 56 goals, and was appointed president of the Cameroon FA back in December.
