Roy Keane has surprised supporters by returning for Manchester United’s Legends of the North clash against Liverpool.

The Irishman, 51, previously revealed that it was "very, very embarrassing" he was unable to play in testimonial matches for being too unfit – but United have announced that he will be making a shock appearance.

The former captain is representing United's team at Anfield, in a second-leg battle for a contest that has raised over £1.3million for the club's foundation.

It comes as a bit of a shock as Keane, when speaking to Off The Ball, explained: "I'm not fit. I'm far from fit. My fitness levels are actually very, very embarrassing. Just because I've not put on loads of weight doesn't mean to say I'm fit. I wouldn't really be able to do any running.

"Put it this way, I've been invited a number of times over the last few years to play legends games or whatever you want to call it. I'd find it really difficult because I wouldn't be able to get around. Too many injury problems.

"I try to have a decent diet and I'm obviously weary about putting on too much weight. But I certainly wouldn't be fit enough to go on any sort of run. I do a small bit of cycling but even that – I'm not exactly Sean Kelly."

The midfielder retired from football at the age of 34 in 2006 after a spell with Celtic. He then tried his hand at management, before becoming a TV pundit.

It has been 16 years since Keane last played, but now it appears that the wait is over.

Saturday’s clash kicks off at 3pm and the club legend is set to appear alongside the likes of Jaap Stam, Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov.
