Ronaldo ‘moves closer’ to Man Utd return as Solskjaer identifies Fred upgrade

Though Manchester United have made a marked improvement under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season, they will need to be active in the summer transfer window if they are to kick on.

There are several areas of the squad that the Red Devils will need to reinforce in order to mount a serious Premier League title challenge next term.

That includes defence, with Solskjaer keen to find a top-quality partner for Harry Maguire at centre-back.

Edinson Cavani’s impending departure also means United will most likely need to bring in a new striker to lead the line.

Here, Mirror Football rounds up the latest Manchester United transfer news…

Solskjaer names Fred replacement

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly told United chiefs the player he wants to replace Fred in the Red Devils’ midfield.

Fichajes claim that the United boss has identified Miralem Pjanic as the man to take his midfield to the next level.

Pjanic only joined Barcelona last September but has failed to break into Ronald Koeman’s plans this season, starting just six games in La Liga.

While not the biggest area that they need to improve in, United’s defensive midfield, and Fred in particular, has been criticised this season.

Dalot drawing admirers

Diogo Dalot looks to be edging closer to a return to Italy this summer after a mixed spell on loan at AC Milan.

The right-back failed to convince Ole Gunnar Solskjaer he could be the back-up to Aaron Wan-Bissaka and joined Milan on a season-long loan.

But the 22-year-old has struggled for consistent game time at the San Siro, as Milan have challenged for the Serie A title.

Dalot’s mixed spell has not put suitors off though, with Record reporting that Napoli are now considering a deal to bring him back to Serie A on loan next season.

Ronaldo ‘willing’ to take United pay cut

It would be one of the most stunning transfers of recent times, but the rumours linking Cristiano Ronaldo with a return to Manchester United continue to persist.

The Portuguese superstar had a highly-successful six-year spell at Old Trafford, winning three Premier League titles and scoring 118 goals.

And as he enters the final year of his contract at Juventus, Gazzetta dello Sport report he would be 'willing' to take a paycut to sign for United if an offer arrived.

Despite that though, the Italian newspaper state that hopes of a deal actually happening are not high.
