Romelu Lukaku ‘willing to slash wages’ by £3m to ensure he quits Chelsea

Romelu Lukaku could force his way out of Chelsea this summer by accepting a huge pay-cut amid talks over a potential return to Inter Milan a year after his £97.5million switch.

The Belgium international striker has had a nightmare second spell at Stamford Bridge since firing Inter to Serie A glory in 2020/21 – scoring just eight times in the Premier League.

The 29-year-old was forced to apologise back in January following an interview with Sky Italy in which he suggested he never should have left Inter before questioning the tactics of Thomas Tuchel, who led Chelsea to Champions League glory months earlier.

While it comes as no surprise that Lukaku fancies a return to the country, the reported lengths he is willing to go to in order to secure that move might do.

The Daily Mail reports that Lukaku is willing to take a pay-cut of a huge £3million a year with Inter short of cash having lost their Serie A crown to rivals AC Milan.

The 29-year-old's new earnings would be in the region of £125,000-a-week or £6.4m a year, which is around £3m less than his Chelsea agreement.

Back in May, the former Manchester United man seemed to lash out at suggestion from his own agent that talks were due to take place with new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly.

With Tuchel openly baffled by Federico Pastorello's comments over potential negotiations with Boehly, Lukaku wasted no time in trying to clear the air

He wrote on Instagram: "Never ever will I let someone speak for me…

"I kept my mouth shut and focused on helping the team and end the season in the best way possible. So if someone out there trying to say something about me and the club…Not in my name. RL."

Pastorello had told La Repubblica: "Chelsea are in takeover discussions, we do not know the new owners, let alone if we can open talks with Inter or AC Milan. We have to wait."

As well as saying: "Lukaku has a problem, but we will solve it."
