Rio Ferdinand highlights what Romelu Lukaku needs from Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea

Rio Ferdinand believes Chelsea record signing Romelu Lukaku needs Thomas Tuchel’s full confidence, if he is ever going to reproduce his best form.

While the Belgian striker has impressed in flashes, the former Manchester United ace is yet to really justify the £97.5million Chelsea paid Inter Milan last summer. Lukaku has contributed 15 goals and two assists in 43 appearances for the west Londoners in all competitions this season.

After a positive run which saw him bag a brace against Wolves and an impressively composed third against Leeds United, the Belgian was given the nod to start the Blues’ FA Cup Final clash against Liverpool. But Ferdinand believes you could visibly see his lack of confidence in the way in which he snatched at his first half effort against Jurgen Klopp ’s team.

“That comes down to one thing, confidence,” Ferdinand said to the Vibe with Five podcast when asked about Lukaku’s opportunity. “He hasn’t got the confidence and he hasn’t got the confidence of the coach.

“No matter what the manager says to him right now, even if he says ‘I believe in you, you’re my guy’ that takes probably another ten games before he feels that confidence coming through, because of what’s gone on in the season.”

Despite enjoying a tough battle with Virgil van Dijk, Lukaku found chances very hard to come by, before he was substituted for Hakim Ziyech in the second half. But the best of which came in the first half when a neat through ball rolled onto his left foot, but his instinctive effort on the turn was just over.

While his connection was relatively sweet, Lukaku’s accuracy was nowhere to be seen in the chance. And Ferdinand believes he may have had more composure if he was afforded the same confidence he received from Antonio Conte at Inter Milan.

“He (Tuchel) hasn’t picked him enough, so he knows that the manager doesn’t trust him properly. Then that filters through to the team," Ferdinand added.

“He’s probably thinking that some of the players are doubting him, he has not done what they expected him to do so he’s at his lowest of lows. Any chance that came to him in that game, it was not the Lukaku in an Inter Milan shirt.”
