Prince Mohammed bin Salman wanted Man Utd takeover as Glazers ‘consider sale’

The Glazers are reportedly considering selling Manchester United following this week’s European Super League collapse – which could allow Saudi Arabia’s Prince Mohammed bin Salman to pounce.

United were one of 12 European clubs who announced their intention to break away and form a highly controversial Super League late on Sunday night, only for mass protests over the plans to force them into an embarrassing U-turn.

Along with fellow Premier League Big Six clubs Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham, and Italy’s AC Milan and Inter Milan, the Red Devils reversed their decision and pulled out of the project on Tuesday night.

Ed Woodward is now planning to step down from his position as United’s executive vice-chairman at the end of 2021, and Daily Star Sport understands he chose to fall on his own sword after realising he had made “one of the biggest mistakes of his professional career”.

According to the Daily Mail’s Mike Keegan, United’s vastly-unpopular Glazer owners could even cash out after seeing their Super League dreams go up in smoke.

That would be music to the ears of Saudi’s Bin Salman, who was reportedly keen to buy United back in 2019.

It is believed he was prepared to fork out around £3.5billion to take the Old Trafford reins, which would have handed the Glazers a huge profit after purchasing the club for £790million back in 2005.

However, at the time the United chiefs insisted they were not open to offers.

  • After seeing that takeover bid rejected, Bin Salman turned his attention to Newcastle a year later.

The Middle East based Prince was at the forefront of a consortium bid to relieve St James’ Park of Mike Ashley’s wretched ownership, which was also backed by Amanda Stanley’s PCP Capital Partners and the Reuben brothers.

Yet in the end that proposed £300million deal collapsed amid concerns over Saudi Arabia’s human rights record and accusations of TV piracy.

Similar fears could thwart any potential Bin Salman takeover at United, but should the Glazers decide to call time on their 16-year stint in Manchester he is likely to be at the front of any race to replace them.
