Premier League’s top goals per 90 minute striker named – but it’s not Harry Kane

The Premier League’s best striker for goals per 90 minutes has been named – but it is not Tottenham star Harry Kane.

Spurs’ captain just edged the Golden Boot honour on the last day of the season, scoring in a 4-2 win over Leicester on the last day of the season for 23 goals.

It put the 27-year-old just one ahead of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, allowing team-mate Sadio Mane to score both in a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.

While the pair were battling it out for a third Golden Boot, they were far off the pace when it comes to the ‘goals per 90 minutes’ stat.

This number takes the number of times a Premier League forward has hit the back of the net and divides it by total minutes played before multiplying by the length of a full game.

And the player who took the highest rate is Kane’s Tottenham team-mate Gareth Bale.

The Welshman, who spent the season on loan from Real Madrid, hit 1.07 goals per 90 minutes as he scored 11 goals in just 920 minutes of action.

He played just four of the first 18 league games of the season, scoring his first against Brighton for a 2-1 win, before becoming a regular starter from February.

Bale grabbed braces against Burnley and Palace before clinching a hat-trick at home to Sheffield United.

Spurs’ No.9 also put the nail in the coffin for Leicester’s Champions League hopes with two goals in the final-day victory – but the Foxes are the club of the player who takes second place in the ‘goals per 90 minutes’ race.

Kelechi Ihaenacho’s 0.74 was the nearest to the Welshman, having scored just one more goal in 1,456 minutes as nine of the goals came in just seven games.

The Nigerian’s first goal of the season came in February against Fulham before starting his streak against Burnley a month later.

Kane does make it into the top three, though, at 0.66 with the Golden Boot-winning 23 goals from over 3,082 minutes of Premier League action.

And it puts the Tottenham star just one hundredth ahead of Manchester United’s Edinson Cavani.

The Uruguayan, who arrived on a free from PSG last summer, found the back of net 10 times in the top flight from 1,366 minutes and 13 starts.

His last strike put the 34-year-old in contention for the Premier League goal of the season as he scored an outrageous 40-yard strike at Old Trafford in a 1-1 draw against Fulham this month.

While Salah just sneaks into the top five on 0.64 goals per 90 minutes, his 22 goals coming in 3,078 minutes.

When it comes to whole teams, though, it is no surprise to see champions Manchester City leading the way with 2.16 goals per 90 minutes – 0.32 ahead of United and 0.42 ahead of Kane’s Tottenham.
