Olivier Giroud has been encouraged to leave Chelsea in January
Chelsea made seven new additions to their squad over the summer, but there is still a sense Frank Lampard sees areas that could still use reinforcement.
With the January transfer window just over six weeks away, speculation is already swirling over who the Blues might target when the market is open for business again.
Lampard is getting close to settling on his strongest side, but the summer additions have left a number of out-of-favour players at the club. While Declan Rice might be on the radar as an incoming signing, January could be busier for outgoings.
Here are three of today’s most noteworthy transfer stories concerning Chelsea ahead of the January window.
France manager hints Giroud should leave Chelsea
Didier Deschamps has hinted Olivier Giroud should leave Chelsea at the next possible opportunity in order to keep his place in the France squad for next summer’s European Championships.
Giroud is a key figure for Les Blues, helping France to World Cup glory in Russia two years ago, but has struggled to force his way into the starting lineup at Stamford Bridge this season, leading to speculation over his future.
The 34-year-old extended his contract at Chelsea only last season, but has started just one game for the club this season. Deschamps was candid about Giroud’s situation.
“He knows it, what he is going through now cannot continue,” Deschamps told RTL. “For March, he will have to find a solution that is different to the one he is in now.”
Napoli working on January loan deal
Emerson Palmieri could be offered an escape route out of Chelsea by Napoli, with the Serie A club reportedly working on a loan deal for the left back.
Despite persistent speculation of a move away from Stamford Bridge in the summer, Emerson remained at Chelsea for the 2020/21 season. He has, however, fallen down the pecking order since the signing of Ben Chilwell from Leicester City.
According to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport (via Sempre Inter ), Napoli are interested in the Italian international and are working on a loan deal for the player.
Chelsea currently have a surplus of left backs following the signing of Chilwell, with Marcos Alonso also out-of-favour this season.

Antonio Rudiger “would be delighted” with a January move to Barcelona, with the Catalan club having identified the Chelsea defender as a potential target.
The German international has fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge this season and Spanish outlet Sport (via Sport Witness ) claims Rudiger is on Barca’s radar as they struggle to get a deal over the line for Manchester City ’s Eric Garcia.
It’s reported the biggest obstacle to Rudiger signing for the Camp Nou club in January would be his wages, with Chelsea unlikely to subsidise his salary and Barcelona in desperate need to bring down their outlay.
Rudiger was linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur late on in the summer transfer window, with Jose Mourinho believed to be a fan of the 27-year-old.
