N’Golo Kante’s comments on Paul Pogba show Man Utd chief Ed Woodward what might have been

N’Golo Kante claims it is a “pleasure” to play alongside Paul Pogba – and Manchester United must be thinking what might have been if they signed the Chelsea man. Pogba has played some of the best football of his career while in the same team as Kante. The duo were influential in leading France to the World Cup in Russia two years ago.

But arguably the pair have both performed better for their country than their club since that tournament.

Kante has struggled with injury and saw himself being played out of position under former Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri.

Frank Lampard has also been reluctant at times to play Kante in the holding midfield role that brought him so much success at Leicester and in his first campaign at Chelsea.

United were reportedly interested in signing the 29-year-old this summer as Chelsea looked to raise funds for a move for Declan Rice.

A deal never materialised but United are left wondering what could have been if Kante had arrived at Old Trafford to play alongside Pogba week in, week out.

Speaking following France’s win over Portugal on Saturday, Kante was delighted to play with Pogba again.

“He’s been injured for a while and it had been a while since we had played together,” Kante told Telefoot.

“We remember the World Cup that we played together. It’s a pleasure to play with Paul.

“On the pitch, we felt great. I’m satisfied with the performance and the performance of the team. We were at the level we needed to be at.

“There’s a lot expected of us. We’re the world champion and the European Championship will be another challenge, but it’s certain that we’re a great team.”

Pogba has been in and out of the United side so far this season.

And he has once again brought up question marks over his future by stating how different he feels while with the France squad than at his club.

Pogba told RTL: “This is a period that I haven’t previously experienced in my career, as I’ve been used to playing all the time and getting into my rhythm, so that’s suddenly changed.

“I feel I’m gradually getting back into it now. I’m rediscovering my form. That’s the sort of performance that I need to produce and I need to do so consistently.

“[Playing with France] it’s like a window that opens up. It’s a breath of fresh air when you come here. We have a truly fantastic squad. When we come here, we’re all happy.

“We’re all pleased to see one another. We really enjoy ourselves on the pitch.

“That doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy ourselves at club level, but it’s not the same here. We’re a real family, and we have so much fun when we come here.”
