Moment Erik ten Hag tells coach ‘Malacia is amazing’ as he nears first signing

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is pushing hard to make Dutch left-back Tyrell Malacia his first signing at Old Trafford and footage has emerged of the moment he first laid eyes on the player.

In the video, taken during an Eredivisie tie between Ajax and Feyenoord last season, Ten Hag sings Malacia's praises while the cameras are on him in the dugout, as he urges his assistant Michael Reiziger to write his name down.

"That kid at left back is amazing," Ten Hag says as he points in the 22-year-old's direction, before leaning over to his No. 2, saying: "Take note of him."

The Red Devils are looking to offer Feyenoord around £13million for the defender, with Ten Hag keen on bringing in defensive reinforcements ahead of the new season – causing United fans to joke that the deal became a priority once their new manager got a look at Luke Shaw in training.

It isn't the first time Ten Hag has been linked with a move for Malacia either. Last year he hinted that Ajax were considering an approach, but stopped short of officially declaring interest in the player.

"We do think he is a good player, yes," the then Ajax head coach told reporters. "Is Malacia on our list [of targets]? I'm not going to tell you."

Elsewhere, United remain in the hunt for Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong – who shares the same agent as his Holland team-mate Malacia – with Ten Hag desperate to build his new team around his former Ajax protégé.

Barcelona are open to letting the 25-year-old leave – particularly as they need cash in order to fund moves for Robert Lewandowski and Jules Kounde – but want to recoup as much of the £68 million they spent on him back in 2019 as possible.

According to reports, De Jong is reluctant to make the switch, but if anyone is capable of convincing him to join, Ten Hag probably has the best chance.
