Mauricio Pochettino believes Kylian Mbappe is already among ‘the best in the world’ and claims he has the ‘potential’ to succeed Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Mbappe scored twice during PSG’s 4-0 rout of bottom-place Dijon – taking his tally to 18 goals in 23 Ligue 1 games to extend his lead as the division’s top goalscorer.

Pochettino believes it is only a matter of ‘time’ before Mbappe ‘gets the recognition he deserves’ and is named among the likes of Messi and Ronaldo.

Pochettino said Mbappe ‘has the potential’ to reach the same level as the pair but believes the speedy forward needs more time to ‘flesh out his CV’.

‘He lacks nothing but time. We cannot speed up the process. I think he’s already among the best in the world.

‘It will take time for him to flesh out his CV, to get the recognition he deserves and will get.’

Mbappe’s future at the club remains uncertain as he is yet to sign a contract extension to take him beyond his current 2022 expiration date.

Real have been long-term admirers of Mbappe, while Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is also known to be an admirer of the PSG star.

However, the LaLiga giants, more so than most clubs, are feeling the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

PSG are said to want a fee of at least £174m (€200m) for their star man this summer should he not pen a fresh deal and his salary demands would exceed £26m (€30m) a year.

In order to complete a deal, Real Madrid would need to get the likes of Gareth Bale off their books to free up an eye-watering £600,000-a-week of wages.
