Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford limped off in the 2-0 victory against Manchester City with an ankle injury. After the match, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed the England star will have a scan to assess the extent of the problem.

Rashford impressed throughout at the Etihad but was forced off in the 73rd minute.

United introduced Mason Greenwood in his place as the Red Devils ended their rivals’ winning run.

Bruno Fernandes gave them the perfect start from the penalty spot after Anthony Martial was fouled.

Luke Shaw doubled the lead early in the second half.

Solskjaer gave an update on Rashford following the match but is not sure how serious it is at the moment.

He said: “I don’t know. It’s something with his ankle.

“When he sprinted 70 yards to save a goal, it showed the attitude of the boy.

“I think he went over on his ankle but we need to do a scan, I’ve not had time to speak to the doctor yet.”

Rashford later tweeted: “Not the way I wanted to see out the game but a big 3 points, well done lads.”

United boss Solskjaer singled out Anthony Martial and Dean Henderson for praise after the win.

When you come away with a 2-0 win and another clean sheet and a performance like this then you are delighted.

He said: “Every game is different. We went back to be a little bit what we wanted to be and that’s being direct. That was the Anthony Martial of old.

“Until two hours before warm-up I wasn’t sure if he’d play. Today he rediscovered himself. He was really strong on the ball and very positive.

“We had to defend well. No team in the world of football has a chance against Manchester City without being collective.

“Dean Henderson is getting more mature. I’m very happy with him.”

United will hope Rashford recovers fast as they face AC Milan in the Europa League on Thursday.

After that, the Red Devils take on West Ham as they look to secure second place in the Premier League.

As things stand, United trail City by 11 points and accept it is unlikely they will catch Pep Guardiola’s side.

They are fighting Leicester, Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool for the Champions League qualifying places instead.
