Manchester United on verge of £15m deal for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first signing
It is claimed that United are ‘close to agreeing’ a £15million deal for the 21-year-old, who is out of contract with Swansea next summer.
He very nearly joined Leeds in January for £8.5m, with Marcelo Bielsa letting slip he was a target when a folder showing scouting reports of James was spotted on his desktop during his post-spygate press conference.
Although speedster James – who has four goals and seven assists in the Championship this season – has been most prolific off the left wing, Solskjaer is believed to have enquired about his willingness to play on the right for United.
He wouldn’t have had to delve too deep into his contacts book to get a good opinion of the winger either, with Solskjaer’s old teammate Ryan Giggs currently managing him for the Welsh national team.
As well as providing the pace and versatility Solskjaer is looking for, James is also young and homegrown – two more boxes he has been looking to tick.
Although not the stellar name many United fans might have wanted, James’ potential arrival would signal a shift in the club’s approach to recruitment as they look to get more creative.
‘We’ve got to recruit smart, we’ve got to keep blooding the youngsters and we’ll be fine,’ Solskjaer explained to MUTV at the club’s end-of-season awards night.
