Man Utd’s stance on John Murtough’s future to have big impact on transfers

Transfer chief John Murtough is understood to be staying at Manchester United – and it could have a big impact on the club's summer recruitment.

Murtough was appointed the Red Devils' football director back in March, and will be tasked with trying to sign the likes of Erling Haaland and Declan Rice in the upcoming transfer window.

There have been reports he could be heading for the exit door amid the fallout from the European Super League fiasco, which saw United and the rest of the Premier League's 'Big Six' pull out of a controversial breakaway plan just two days after it was announced.

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward appears to have become the first casualty of the debacle, with the Red Devils having announced he will step down at the end of 2021 – although it has been claimed he was preparing to leave anyway.

Woodward's impending departure has raised hopes among many United fans that the Glazer family could also leave, with supporters set to protest against the unpopular owners ahead of the Old Trafford clash against Liverpool a week on Sunday.

But Murtough won't be following Woodward out of the club, as revealed by The Express.

He is tasked with heading up recruitment following criticism of Woodward's role in United's transfer record since he replaced David Gill in 2013.

And Murtough will continue as his job as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side target a striker, a centre-half and other positions in the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils look to have secured Champions League football for next season, and will look to strengthen in the close season to narrow the gap to neighbours City.

Talks will have already begun behind the scenes as United look to beat the competition for Borussia Dortmund star Haaland, as well as West Ham midfielder Rice, who can also double up as a centre-half.

And as United face turmoil off the pitch amid continuing fan discontent with the club's owners, they will be hoping continuity in football matters can provide a springboard for success next term.
