Man Utd manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sent Paul Pogba message by France counterpart

France manager Didier Deschamps has hailed Paul Pogba for his displays over the international break and is hopeful he can replicate it at Manchester United.

At club level, Pogba has been one of United’s many underperforming players in a mixed start to the season.

But with France, the midfielder retains the trust and backing from Deschamps and was a key figure in the wins over Portugal and Sweden.

Pogba returns to Manchester today and will hope to be in contention to face West Brom this weekend.

And Deschamps says Pogba’s displays over the international break proved just how good he is.

“Just see what he was able to do in Portugal and what he did tonight,” Deschamps said.

“I know him, I know how he works. He has pride and above all he has talent. When you have to defend, he can defend.

“When he has the opportunity to express himself, he is able to do so.

“Paul is a top-level player and I hope what he did with us will be useful to him when he gets back to his club.”

Meanwhile, Watford striker Troy Deeney has questioned why United opted to sell Romelu Lukaku in 2019.

Lukaku was sold to Inter Milan and has gone on to score 41 goals in 57 appearances under Antonio Conte.

At the weekend, the 27-year-old impressed for Belgium as they beat England in the Nations League and Deeney feels he deserved more time.

“He’s very good, and I always thought it was a strange one when United got rid of him,” he told talkSPORT.

“They kind of wanted a complete player because his goal record wasn’t that bad, to be honest.

“But I do understand why people were getting a little frustrated in terms of when he was at United.

“When he’s gone out to Italy you can see the tactical side of it and coaching side of it has really improved his game. He’s got a point to prove.

“He’s been a beast of a human being since he was 16; everyone was saying ‘look at the talent’.

“And the goals are there now. In games you can see how strong he is, his link up play is good and he got an assist technically for the goal [against England].”
