Manchester United fans have reacted hilariously to Erik ten Hag's team ending their "trophy drought" as the Red Devils swept Liverpool aside to lift a "LEGO" trophy.

Ten Hag saw his United tenure get off to the perfect start on Tuesday as his new side smashed four without reply past Jurgen Klopp's Reds to claim the 2022 Bangkok Century Cup. Jadon Sancho, Fred, Anthony Martial and Facundo Pellestri were all on the scoresheet in Thailand as Ten Hag clinched silverware – of sorts – in his very first game in charge.

The Dutchman appeared evidently unimpressed when awarded the trophy following the win and it's fair to say United's fans completely understood why. To say the trophy was unique would be quite the understatement.

Following the success, Ten Hag, together with Bruno Fernandes – United's captain for the occasion – held aloft the comical 2022 Bangkok Century Cup – a red and silver trophy with the winners' club logo emblazoned upon it. The cup rose from what appeared to be a plastic replica of the Rajamangala Stadium, with a Star Wars-esque font depicting the competition's name on the trophy's mount.

And while it may well be one of the most bizarre pieces of silverware within the game, United's fans were quick to celebrate the success regardless – especially after years in the wilderness. One fan gleefully joked on Twitter: "The trophy drought is over," followed by a laughing face emoji.

But while United's supporters savoured their rare taste of success, they also couldn't help but ridicule the trophy's tacky design. One fan remarked: "What on earth is this trophy bruv, they gave us a LEGO stadium."

Having been knocked out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid at the Round of 16 stage last campaign, United took on the unwanted achievement of suffering their worst trophy drought in 40 years. Last season's European disaster means the earliest the Red Devils can claim official silverware is on February 26, 2023, by winning next season's League Cup final.

The last major trophy won by the 20-time English champions was the 2017 Europa League – a success masterminded by Jose Mourinho. And though the 2022 Bangkok Century Cup won't technically be recognised as breaking that drought, United's fans playfully revelled in some long-awaited glory.

"Erik ten Hag needed just 90 minutes to break Man Utd’s trophy drought," one fan wrote. Another poked fun at the club's fierce rivals and Century Cup final opponents, adding: "Liverpool start this season how they ended the last one. Watching someone else lift a trophy…"
