Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag could take the opportunity to watch several January transfer targets when Liverpool host his former club Ajax on Tuesday night. The Dutchman raided the Eredivisie outfit after making the switch to Old Trafford in May, taking Lisandro Martinez and, eventually, Antony with him. Express Sport picks out four more players who Ten Hag might have an eye on.

Jurrien Timber

Versatile defender Jurrien Timber was one of the strong early contenders to join Ten Hag at United. Reports suggested the 52-year-old wanted the Netherlands international as a replacement for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, of whom Ten Hag is not a major fan.

However, Timber decided to stay in Amsterdam, signing a new three-year contract in August. The 21-year-old partly made his decision to guarantee a place at the winter World Cup, though, so could decide to leave for United once the competition is over in December.

The Red Devils failed to sign a right-back in the summer, prioritising deals for defensive midfielder Casemiro and winger Antony in the final weeks of the transfer window. Diogo Dalot has started the campaign ahead of Wan-Bissaka, but there is scope to upgrade in the position.

Mohammed Kudus

Everton were linked with a late move for young midfielder Mohammed Kudus but Ajax – infuriated by the volume of players who wanted to leave – ensured the Ghana international remained at the club. The 22-year-old has enjoyed an excellent start to the season, and a particular highlight was a wonderful solo goal in last week’s Champions League demolition of Rangers.

Kudus has five goals in eight appearances this season, an impressive tally considering he managed just one Eredivisie strike in 16 games last term. Playing further forward – often as a striker – has brought out the former Nordsjaelland star’s best form.

If United want a versatile, goalscoring midfielder, a pursuit of Kudus could be ideal. He will likely play a key role at Anfield on Tuesday night.

Brian Brobbey

Hoping to paper over the cracks of a transfer window that saw so many departures, Ajax re-signed Brian Brobbey from RB Leipzig. The 20-year-old had struggled for game time in Germany and decided to return to the Netherlands.

But a positive start to the Dutch campaign has already seen Brobbey linked with a departure. He has scored three goals in six matches.

Ten Hag is believed to have wanted a new striker in the summer but understood that funds were limited and that other positions were of much more serious concern. Brobbey could be a player who thrives under Ten Hag at Old Trafford in the future, and he’s hinted he’d be open to such a move in future.

Edson Alvarez

United did not appear to be in the strongly-contested race to sign midfielder Edson Alvarez in January, but could be in future transfer windows. Chelsea and Newcastle both had offers rejected for the Mexico international.

Ajax remained firm after several key players departed, and insisted that Alvarez was to remain. It remains to be seen whether they will be able to hold out for the duration of the January transfer window. United would benefit from an extra midfield signing.
