Liverpool have ‘intensified’ their efforts to sign the Spain international, who is also attracting interest from Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino as well as Bayern Munich.

Gavi has been in blistering form for Barcelona this season. He has made 40 appearances across all competitions – with two goals and six assists.

Xavi heaped praise on the youngster following the 4-2 win over Atletico Madrid in February.

Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino is said to be a fan of the young midfielder

He said: ‘Gavi is very versatile, and can play in multiple positions. Today, we played with a false winger and a false striker. I was looking for superiority in the midfield.

‘Usually I want true wingers, but each game is a different world, and my decisions are determined by that.’

Barcelona will seek to continue their strong league form when they host Cadiz on Monday night.
