The Argentine tested positive for the virus soon after the New Year after enjoying French football’s winter break in his homeland.

However, Messi has since revealed that he continued to suffer with respiratory problems even after testing negative.

In an interview with Argentinian media outlet TYC Sports, via Marca, the forward said: ‘It left me with after-effects.

‘It left me with after-effects in my lungs. I came back and it was like a month and a half without even being able to run because my lungs were affected.’

In addition to missing two Ligue 1 games, Messi was also sidelined with the virus for PSG’s 4-0 Coupe de France win over Vannes.

The Argentine claimed he was unable to run for six weeks because his lungs were affected

Despite sitting out the three fixtures, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner admitted he still returned too soon.

Messi revealed that by pushing himself to return to training he actually worsened his health.

‘I came back before I should have, and it got worse because I went too fast and it ended up setting me back,’ he said.

‘But I couldn’t take it anymore, I wanted to run, to train. I wanted to get going. And in the end, it got worse.’

Back in January, Messi admitted to fans on Instagram that it was taking him longer than expected to make his return to the pitch.

He revealed he was back training but had not fully recovered yet, in a post shared on January 13, which showed him and his wife Antonela Roccuzzo relaxing at home.

The post read: ‘As you know I had COVID and I wanted to thank you for all the messages I received and to tell you that it took longer than I thought to be well but I have almost recovered and I am really looking forward to getting back on the pitch.

‘I have been training these days to get 100%, very beautiful challenges are coming this year and I hope we can see each other again very soon. Thanks!!’
