Levy sacked Mourinho 'because he feared losing 10 first-team players'

Daniel Levy sacked Jose Mourinho ‘because he feared he would lose as many as 10 first-team players this summer’… with Tottenham chairman desperate to keep ‘dream team’ of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Gareth Bale

  • Daniel Levy feared losing 10 Tottenham players if he did not sack Jose Mourinho
  • The Spurs chairman relieved the Portuguese manager of his duties on Monday
  • The decision came just six days before the club play in the Carabao Cup final
  • Levy was concerned Harry Kane and Dele Ali would lead a mass exodus

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy reportedly decided to sack Jose Mourinho in the fear that as many as 10 first team players would push for transfers this summer if he remained in charge.

Mourinho was relieved of his duties on Monday after 17 months in charge of the north London club and just six days before they take on Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final.

According to Eurosport, Levy took the decision because he did not want to lose his ‘dream team’ of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Gareth Bale this summer.

Spurs risk losing leading goalscorer Harry Kane the longer their trophy drought continues

Spurs are desperate to keep leading goalscorer Kane, but the England captain is set to attract interest from other clubs at the end of the season.

The striker, who is yet to win a trophy with his boyhood club, has insisted he will not make a decision on his future until after the Euros.

Levy is also a big fan of Alli, despite the midfielder failing to hit form in the last two campaigns. Alli endured a difficult relationship with Mourinho, making just two starts in the league this season and was left out of the squad entirely for seven games between October and December.

The 25-year-old was heavily linked with a loan move to Paris Saint-Germain and a reunion with former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino in January. Spurs refused to sanction the move.

Dele Alli started only two Premier League games under the Portuguese boss this season

There is hope that the next manager will be able to get the best out of Alli with Levy still wanting him to be a key part of the team going forward.

Bale is only on loan from Real Madrid and last month raised doubts over the chances of him returning to the club permanently at the end of the season.

The Welshman only started six Premier League games under Mourinho and was used more frequently in the Europa League.

Speaking during the last international break, Bale said: The original plan was only to do a season at Spurs, then after the Euros, I’ll still have a year left at Madrid and my plan is to go back. That’s as far as I’ve planned to be honest.’

He later clarified that he had to go back to Madrid for contractual reasons and that any decision on his future would be made in the summer.

‘Going into next season, my contract says legally I have to go back to Real Madrid which is what I stated,’ he said.

‘I’m not being disrespectful to anybody, that’s literally what I have to do.

Gareth Bale, on loan from Real Madrid also struggled for game time under the manager

‘Real Madrid are I guess my parent club and as far as I agreed I am on loan at Tottenham until the end of the season and then I go back. That is the plan so far.

‘The reason I left is because I wanted to play games and get match fit and enjoy my football.

‘Obviously come the summer I will be going back to Real Madrid and will go from there. The plan is to go back and whether then I sit down with my agent and decide is something I will do in the summer.’

Real Madrid have made it clear Bale does not have a future at the club and Eurosport claim that Spurs have the first option to sign him in the summer. With Mourinho out of the picture, it is thought the winger could still sign a permanent deal with the Premier League side.

Harry Winks had also been frozen out by Mourinho, with the midfielder making just two league appearances since the end of January.

Harry Winks is another player who appeared to have been frozen out by Mourinho

Mourinho appeared to have a positive relationship with Kane and Son Heung-min, who both thanked the manager for his time with the club on social media.

Kane wrote: ‘Thank you for everything boss. A pleasure to have worked together. I wish you all the best for your next chapter.’

Meanwhile, Son said: ‘I have no words to describe how I’m feeling, it’s been a pleasure to work with you.

‘I’m sorry things didn’t work out and truly grateful for the time we’ve had together. Good luck and all the best for the future.’
