Los Angeles FC Kellyn Acosta had to point out to a reporter that he did not play for MLS Cup rival Philadelphia Union in his pre-game press conference.

The midfielder was speaking ahead of LAFC’s showdown with Philadelphia after their 3-0 victory over Austin last week, but was mistaken for a player on the opposing team.

A reporter asks: ‘How exciting is it to be in Philly right now? The Phillies are in the World Series, the Eagles are undefeated and you guys are playing in the MLS Cup. Has it sunk in?

Acosta, looking puzzled, replies: ‘Just playing against a Philadelphia team you’re saying?’

The reporter tries to clarify, adding: ‘The excitement right now in Philadelphia. The Phillies are in the World Series, the Eagles are undefeated and you guys are playing for the championship as well. How exciting is that for you? Has that sunk it yet?

Someone in the background can be heard saying: ‘This is an LAFC player.’ 

Still confused, Acosta responds: ‘I don’t play for Philly.’

The reporter realizes his error and says: ‘I’m sorry.’

Acosta tries to limit the embarrassment for the reporter by making light of the situation, ending the awkward chat: ‘Hey, but it’s exciting for them I guess.’ 

Acosta’s LAFC face Philadelphia in the MLS Cup final at 4 p.m. ET on Saturday after tying for most points in the regular season at 67. 

LAFC who won the Supporters’ Shield for best regular-season record based on their league-best 21 wins. The Union won 19 games. 

Los Angeles are poised to become the eighth MLS club in 27 seasons to win the Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup in the same calendar year. The last to pull off the double was Toronto FC in 2017. 

‘They’ve definitely gotten the recognition they’ve deserved (and) it’s going to be a great battle on Saturday,’ Acosta said of the Union. 

‘I think this game is going to have a little bit of everything, and I think from our standpoint, we’ve got to be up for the intense matchup.’
