Klopp provides Jota update as Liverpool forward misses West Brom clash

Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Diogo Jota will miss the remainder of the club’s season due to a foot injury.

Jota, 24, has started Liverpool’s last four matches in the English top flight but had to be taken off in the champions’ 4-2 win away to Manchester United, with Sadio Mane coming on in his place in the 74th minute.

The forward had looked set to continue his run in the side away to West Brom on Sunday afternoon – with the substitution not thought to be injury-related – but it’s since been revealed he came off with a foot problem at Old Trafford.

It means Jota will be absent at the Hawthorns and Klopp will also be without the attacker for the Reds’ final two games against Burnley and Crystal Palace.

‘No good thing without a bad thing – so, we won at Manchester United but Diogo got something with the bone,’ Klopp told Sky Sports ahead of kick-off.

‘Not too serious but serious enough to end the season. That’s it.’

The German was more upbeat regarding the fitness of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner, who were not considered for the trip to West Brom but could both return at Turf Moor on Wednesday night.

‘Oxlade is not in the squad, was ill a few days,’ Klopp added.

‘We decided not to take him here just to give him now another session today that he is ready for Wednesday.

‘Millie hopefully could be ready for Wednesday. We take what we get.’

Jota has had an eye-catching debut since swapping Wolves for Liverpool last summer, notching up 13 goals in all competitions for the Merseyside giants.

But injury has hampered Jota’s progress this term, with a knee issue keeping him sidelined for 18 games from December through to March.
