Juventus 2-0 Inter Milan: Debutant Nicolo Fagioli scores on his Serie A debut to seal huge Derby d’Italia win for the Old Lady, who climb up to fifth place and leave rivals seventh after fifth defeat of the season

  • Nicolo Fagioli scored on his Serie A debut to seal a 2-0 win for Juventus vs Inter
  • Adrien Rabiot netted the first goal for Juve in the second half with a classy finish
  • Inter Milan troubled the home side in the first half but couldn’t convert chances
  • Juventus climb to fifth in the Serie A standings, just two points behind Atalanta

Nicolo Fagioli’s Derby d’Italia dreams came true on Sunday night as he scored a goal on his Serie A debut to give Juventus a 2-0 win against Inter Milan.

It took a while for the game to warm up, with the away side starting the better team, with Inter’s Lautaro Martinez having the real first chance of the match five minutes into the match, slicing a half-volley just wide of the post.

But it was Filip Kostic who ensured the victory for Max Allegri’s side, teeing up Adrien Rabiot with a zipping cross into the penalty area, which the French midfielder slotted home with a superb first-time finish.

Juventus had a goal disallowed just ten minutes later, with Kostic again delivering a cross into the box from a corner, which was met by Danilo, who, despite turning the ball into the goal with his shin, appeared to handle the ball in the process.

Young star Fagioli, a graduate of the Juventus academy, secured the three points for the Torino side, after he received a cross, again from Kostic, and hammered in a deflected shot on the 84th minute to send the Allianz Stadium into delirium.

The 21-year-old saw his chance and fired home a late goal to secure a 2-0 win for Juve

Inter looked the better team for large parts of the game, with Edin Dzeko going close to putting the visitors ahead after 26 minutes with a header from a Martinez cross going just wide of the post.

Denzel Dumfries should have also sent the visitors ahead three minutes before the 45-minute mark but blazed Nicolo Barella’s assist over the bar from inside the box.

The visitors continued the pressure in the first minutes of a second half that created opportunities for a Juventus counter-attack, that saw Kostic break away from the Milan midfield to tee up Danilo for their first goal.

‘It was great to watch this game, especially as we were a little lucky in the first half, but when you have a pro-active attitude and work for your teammate, you are more likely to get a positive result,’ Allegri told DAZN after the match.

‘The system has given the team more solidity, but the most important thing is that the team works together, defends behind the ball, understands when it’s time to suffer and that it lasts 95 minutes.

‘Earlier in the season, we would play about 30 minutes and then drift off, but we are in it all the way now, even during tough moments. That is an important step.

‘This is the right spirit and raises the level of competition within the squad.’

And it was a fairytale start to life in Serie A for the 21-year-old, who helped his side climb the Italian first division table to fifth place, with Juve now just two points behind Atalanta and ten points off Napoli at the top of the ladder.

Meanwhile, Inter, who looked to be the dominant team early on, stay seventh in the table, but could leapfrog tonight’s opponents with a win against Bologna in midweek.
