Jordan Henderson ‘may call Steven Gerrard’ ahead of Liverpool and City final day

Jordan Henderson has joked he may call former Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard ahead of Aston Villa's final day trip to Manchester City.

If the Reds are to nick the Premier League title from under the nose of Pep Guardiola, they require a big favour from Gerrard's team at the Etihad. For Liverpool to be crowned champions, they need to beat Wolves at Anfield and hope that Villa can get a result at the home of the reigning title holders.

Gerrard famously never won the league during his time on Merseyside. But he could play kingmaker on the final day. And Henderson joked he could give his old pal a call to remind him of what's at stake this weekend.

"We’ve had this [needing Man City to lose] before when they played Brighton," Henderson told Sky Sports. "The crowd cheer and you sort of know what’s going on – it’s hard to focus on the game.

"But hopefully, from that experience, we’ve learned from it and we can just concentrate on the game and concentrate on what we need to do. Hopefully, Stevie and Villa can do us a favour at City!"

Asked if he will give his predecessor as Liverpool captain a call, he replied: "I might do. I might do it now actually!"

Former Aston Villa forward Gabriel Agbonlahor admitted he would call Gerrard if he was in Henderson's position. "It wouldn’t surprise me if players like Jordan Henderson are messaging Steven Gerrard," Agbonlahor told talkSPORT.

"The quadruple’s on! They played together, they probably still speak. If I’m Jordan Henderson, I’m messaging Stevie G saying, 'Come on, please, do us a favour on Sunday!'

"Obviously his team is going to be motivated anyway, but Gerrard’s going to want to help Liverpool out. He’s not going to have his team on the beach on Sunday. He’s going to have them really up for it."

Liverpool fans will be hoping that former Anfield stars Philippe Coutinho and Danny Ings can play their part on the pitch at the Etihad while Gerrard masterminds the result from the dugout.
