Ryan Mason can have a similar impact on Tottenham as Roberto Di Matteo had at Chelsea, claims former Spurs midfielder Jamie Redknapp. Mason has been appointed Spurs’ interim boss following the sacking of Jose Mourinho last Monday. It is the 29-year-old’s first steps into management after a fractured skull forced him into early retirement as a player.

Mason won his first match in charge on Wednesday as Tottenham beat Southampton 2-1 in the Premier League.

His next match is the small matter of the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, aiming to win the club’s first piece of silverware since 2008.

Redknapp believes Tottenham do have the tools to cause the three-time back-to-back holders problems.

“To beat Man City, you’ve got to defend for your life,” Redknapp said on the Pitch to Post Preview podcast.

“Tottenham did have success in beating them under Jose and that was by defending in numbers.

“They’re going to have to have a bit of luck and play with confidence defensively because they haven’t looked like keeping clean sheets and this Man City team asks so many questions of you.

“Going forward, the pace of Son [Heung-min] will be needed to exploit that [right-hand] side.

“That will be an area they believe they have got to work Son and maybe get [Lucas] Moura into those positions if Harry Kane isn’t fit and defend well and play on the counter-attack.

“City play such a high line and that is possibly where they can get some success.

“But the problem is, you’ve got to get the ball first because Man City control the ball so well and don’t let you get hold of it.”

Redknapp believes City are strong favourites to win the competition for a fourth year in a row.

However, he reckons victory on Sunday could lead to an “amazing six weeks” in charge for Mason and has compared the situation to that of Di Matteo at Chelsea.

Di Matteo became Chelsea interim manager in 2012 and upset all the odds by leading the Blues to their first Champions League triumph.

“I just think City are a different class,” Redknapp continued.

“Anybody else, I think this is a 50/50 game with Tottenham because I think they’ve got a good squad but against City with the way they control the ball, I just don’t see them making the same mistake that they did last week when they lost to Chelsea.

“But there is this strange thing in football that can happen, where someone like Di Matteo where he won that Champions League, sometimes you just don’t know in football and this could end up being six of the most amazing weeks for Ryan Mason.

“Who knows – let’s see what happens – but I do think Man City are red-hot favourites and we will see them lifting the trophy again.”
