VAR was once again thrust into the spotlight as Liverpool hosted Chelsea in the Premier League. Timo Werner raced through on goal and beat Alisson to the ball before tapping it into the empty net.

Ozan Kabak attempted to race back and stop the German forward from scoring in the 15th minute but he was unable to keep up.

It looked like Thomas Tuchel’s decision to play Werner through the middle paid dividends with an early goal.

That was until VAR stepped in and chalked the effort off for offside.

It was deemed that Werner was the wrong side of Liverpool’s deepest defender Andy Robertson.

However, it was only half of the Chelsea star’s arm which was in an offside position.

Sky Sports co-commentator and Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher felt the officials got the decision wrong.

“I just feel like Andy Robertson just played him onside,” he said.

Following another replay, Carragher added: “You see it there, he is offside because he has got his arm further out than Andy Robertson.”

Chelsea fans were raging after they were denied an opening goal, especially given Werner’s rotten luck this season.

One fan wrote: “Seriously though, if Werner had scored with that part of his arm it would be disallowed for handball.

“So how can that part of his arm be used to disallow the goal for offside?”

Another added: “If Werner had shaved his armpits before the game, the goal would have stood.

“A truly ludicrous decision. In their search for perfection, the refs running VAR are ruining the game.”

A third commented: “If Werner knocks that in with the part of his arm that apparently was offside you know VAR rules it out for handball. Ruining the game week in, week out.”

While a further supporter said: “The worst thing about the Werner offside decision, aside from him just blatantly being level, is that I couldn’t celebrate his goal because I knew the VAR check would be tight.”
