Ivan Toney’s family racially abused by Everton fan as star vows "punishment"

Everton have promised to act if they find the man alleged to have racially abused Ivan Toney’s family after the striker reported the incident.

The Toffees are working with Merseyside police to identity the culprit after Toney made the accusation in a Twitter post on Sunday evening, hours after the Bees had pulled off a 3-2 comeback win at Goodison Park. The Brentford striker claimed his family were racially abused by a male Everton fan and vowed to ensure he is punished by the authorities.

The striker posted on Twitter from his official account: “And for the man that racially abused my family I’ll do everything I can to get you the punishment you deserve!"

Everton were quick to respond to Toney on social media, writing: “There is no place in football – or society – for racism. We are assisting Merseyside Police to ensure the individual is identified and dealt with appropriately.” It is understood the Toffees will hand out a lifetime ban if the culprit is found.

Toney is not the only Brentford player to have been targeted during Sunday's encounter. Full-back Rico Henry also took to social media to report that his mother had been subjected to abuse and pledged to join Toney in seeking strong punishments to be handed out to those responsible.

He posted: “I never usually speak out on things that don’t physically harm me or my family but to see my mom upset after being racially abused by a few Everton fans brought fire to my stomach! I will do anything for them and whatever it takes to get the small minority punished. This is not acceptable and must be investigated immediately.”

Brentford twice came from behind to condemn nine-man Everton to defeat after a thrilling contest on Merseyside. Dominic Calvert-Lewin put the hosts in front before Jarrad Branthwaite was sent off for hauling down Toney when through on goal. Seamus Coleman's own goal brought Brentford level before Richarlison's penalty put Frank Lampard's side back in front.

But goals from Frank Wissa and Henry in the space of three minutes turned the game on its head before Solomon Rondon saw red late on. The win lifts Thomas Frank's side into 11th in the Premier League table and the Dane commended his side in showing their strength to complete the comeback.

“To go behind, come back, go behind and come back again shows a team fighting and giving everything,” the Brentford boss said. “It was an incredible performance that says a lot about the character of these players. The so-called experts say we have gone on holiday, that we have nothing to fight for. But we want to win every game we play for the Brentford fans and because we respect the league."
