The hilarious moment Morocco star Rosella Ayane has NO IDEA her decisive penalty has put her country through to their first ever Women Africa Cup of Nations final… as she takes a moment to realise before being swarmed by jubilant team-mates

  • Morocco beat Nigeria on penalties to reach the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations
  • Tottenham forward Rosella Ayane scored the decisive penalty in the shootout
  • However, the 26-year-old didn’t realise that she had scored the winning penalty
  • A confused Ayane was then swarmed by her jubilant team-mates in celebration
  • It is the first time Morocco’s women side have reached the WAFCON final

This was the moment Morocco star Rosella Ayane scored the decisive penalty to book her country’s spot in the Women Africa Cup of Nations final for the first time ever – but she hilariously had no idea it was the winning spot-kick.

Following 1-1 draw between hosts Morocco and nine-woman Nigeria, the semi-final had to be settled by penalties in front of a record crowd of 45,000 people at the Mohamed V stadium in Casablanca.

Both sides managed to successfully convert their first penalties before Ifeoma Onumonu missed Nigeria’s second spot-kick, handing Morocco the advantage in the shootout.

The Tottenham forward calmly stepped up and scored the winning penalty in the shootout

The hosts then managed the convert their next three penalties to leave Tottenham Women forward Ayane with the responsibility of converting from 12 yards and make history for the country.

With ice in her veins, Reading-born Ayane sent Nigeria goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie the wrong way by calmly passing the ball into the net.

While the usual reaction would have been for Ayane to wheel away in euphoric celebration, the forward instead turns around and begins to walk back to the halfway line, believing there is still more to come in the shootout.

The penny soon dropped as she was swarmed by her jubilant team-mates in the semi-final

But with her team-mates charging at her to celebrate the victory, a confused Ayane looks around, opens her arms out to ask what’s going on before the penny finally drops.

The hilarious moment left fans in stitches, with one saying they ‘wouldn’t have asked for a better reaction’ to Morocco reaching the final.

Following a goalless first half, Nigeria were reduced to 10 players after midfielder Halimatu was shown a straight red.

However, the visitors would be the first to score following an own goal from Yasmine Mrabet before Sanaa Mssoudy quickly equalised.

The defending champions then saw forward Rasheedat Ajibade also see red with 19 minutes left, leaving them to defend resolutely for the rest of normal-time and extra-time, to set up the shootout.

Reynald Pedros’ side would go on to win the shootout 5-4 to reach the Women Africa Cup of Nations final for the first time ever.

Morocco will now meet South Africa in the July 23 showpiece, where a new champion will be crowned following Nigeria’s exit from the competition.
