England fans have reacted with devastation after the news Reece James will miss the World Cup with a knee injury.

It was confirmed on Tuesday that the Chelsea defender, 22, will not be selected by Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate in his official 26-man squad for the Qatar tournament.

His absence comes as a big blow to Southgate, with James almost certain to be a starter at either right wing-back or right centre-back had he recovered from the ligament damage in time.

A third tweeted: ‘Gutted for Reece James. By far England’s best RB but we have to play Ben White now either as a RB in a 4 or a RCB in a 5.’

Another posted: ‘Just heard the news about Reece James and I’m gutted. I can’t imagine how heartbroken he would feel. I’m so sorry he didn’t achieve his dream of going to Qatar. We love you and we’re rooting for you @ReeceJames.’

A fifth said: ‘Absolutely gutted for Reece James on a personal level. You just know how badly he’d have wanted to go to his first World Cup. He is obviously a huge loss, however I can’t help but think Gareth Southgate has made the right decision. #CFC.’
