Angry Everton fans have accused Carlo Ancelotti of “betraying” them after leaving to take over at Real Madrid.

Ancelotti was confirmed as Real boss for a second time on Tuesday, six years after his first stint in charge at the Bernabeu.

The Italian leaves Merseyside a year-and-a-half into a four-and-a-half-year deal following his appointment in December 2019.

He led the Toffees to a 12th place finish during his first season in charge, improving slightly to finish 10th this time around.

There was no suggestion Ancelotti wanted to leave Everton prior to Tuesday morning, when rumours first began to gather pace.

By the early evening his departure was confirmed, leaving the Merseysiders searching for a sixth permanent manager since 2016.

Following the announcement, the 61-year-old tweeted: “I would like to thank Everton FC, my players and the supporters for giving me the opportunity to manage this fantastic and historical club.

“I decided to leave as I have a new challenge with a team that was always in my heart, Real Madrid.

“I leave taking with me all the amazing moments we have experienced together and wish the Club and fans all the best.”

Ancelotti’s words haven’t gone down particularly well with Everton fans, the majority of whom are angry at the manner of his exit.

One replied: “Sorry Carlo but returning to Madrid isn’t a “new” challenge, it’s a comfort zone."

“You had the potential to lead us into our iconic new stadium as a legendary Manager. I’m not angry, just disappointed.”

Another wrote: “Sold out your integrity for money.”

Someone else commented: “A man who can't be trusted.”
