Everton have released a statement this morning confirming they have suspended one of their players due to an ongoing police investigation.

The Toffees have not yet disclosed either the Premier League player’s name, nor the offence he is being investigated for at present.

Everton released a statement on their website this morning, reading: "Everton can confirm it has suspended a player pending a police investigation.

"The Club will continue to support the authorities with their inquiries and will not be making any further statement at this time."

The player cannot yet been identified for legal reasons due to the ongoing investigation.

The allegations come as a huge blow to Everton ahead of the new season.

And the news will send shockwaves throughout the football community, and certainly among Premier League players, staff and fans.

Rafa Benitez and his Everton squad returned to Finch Farm for pre-season earlier training this month after the Spaniard replaced Carlo Ancelotti as head coach at Goodison Park, despite fan unrest.

Their first fixture is due to take place on July 26 against Millonaros, before taking on either Arsenal or Inter Milan.

Their final warm-up fixture of pre-season will then be against Manchester United at Old Trafford on August 7.

The Premier League kicks off the following weekend.
