Everton boss Frank Lampard has hit out at referee Michael Oliver for not giving his side a penalty before Jarrad Branthwaite’s red card against Brentford. Everton suffered a potentially damaging 3-2 loss at home to Thomas Frank’s team on Sunday.

The Toffees went into the match knowing victory would secure their status in the Premier League. They got off to the perfect start when Dominic Calvert-Lewin diverted Richarlison’s effort in for his first goal in 2022.

However, the game changed when Branthwaite was given his marching orders for bringing down Bees striker Ivan Toney when through on goal. Lampard had no complaints over the decision to send his defender off.

However, he felt just seconds earlier, his team should have been awarded a penalty. Richarlison clearly had his shirt pulled in the Brentford box but Oliver waved away claims for a penalty before Brentford went up the other end to equalise.

Lampard told Sky Sports: “[The red card] was as critical as can be because we had complete control. A possible penalty in the build-up to that, it’s a clear pull on Richarlison’s shirt.

“People want to criticise, certainly my players whenever they go down and say they go down too easily. You wonder whether players should go down because that’s a penalty.

“He goes down the other end and it’s a mistake by Jarrad to let him run behind. We’ve got to get running early, drop off, deal with it easily, and we didn’t.”

It was set to be an uphill task for Everton from there on in and Brentford equalised through a Seaumus Coleman own goal. But the Toffees were awarded a penalty on the stroke of half-time after a foul by Mads Bech Sorensen on Richarlison.

The Brazilian got up to convert the spot-kick and put his side back ahead. However, the visitors scored twice more in the second half to turn the game on its head.

Substitute Salomon Rondon was then sent off for a reckless challenge to reduce Everton to nine men in the closing stages. Safety is still in the hands of Lampard’s side ahead of Thursday’s match at home to Crystal Palace, and that is the message from the Chelsea legend to his players.

“The important thing is that we have a positive attitude to what the next few days look like going into Palace, because it’s in our hands,” he added. “To be here at Goodison again, hopefully with 11 on the pitch, and go for it ourselves.

“We’ve got two more games, three more points will do it and a home game is the next one.”
