Erik ten Hag to become Man Utd’s first team manager – as opposed to ‘head coach’

Erik ten Hag has assumed the title of 'manager' at Manchester United rather than being the 'head coach' he was at Ajax.

United announced the appointment of Dutchman Ten Hag with a social media post which read: "The new First-Team Manager of Manchester United: Erik ten Hag." Typically, a manager is more involved with the running of the club than a head coach, whose focus is mostly on training the team given to him or her.

Some fans took it as a sign that Ten Hag will have more control when he takes charge in the summer. One wrote: "Give him the power to control the squad however he wants and give him time to get us out of this mess."

Another commented: "This is exciting. A manager with a clear style of play. A progressive appointment. hope we don't f*** this up." A third added: "Give this man the reins. Give him control. The CEO, the Board and the players are now on the hotseat."

However, United have not used the head coach title in any of their previous appointments. Ralf Rangnick, for example, has been referred to as 'interim manager' since his arrival last November.

And in director of football John Murtough, they already have someone overseeing their recruitment policy. It does seem change is in the works at Old Trafford, though.

Not only was Richard Arnold promoted to the role of CEO earlier this year following Ed Woodward's departure from his executive vice-chairman position, but United have also allowed chief scout Jim Lawlor and head of global scouting Marcel Bout to leave this week.

It comes after fans' protests against the Glazer ownership of the club before their recent match with Norwich. But United legend Gary Neville isn't convinced there will be much impact.

In response to the departures, Neville tweeted: "Not quite sure we’re going to see a revolution. Jim has been marginalised for years so this won’t shift the dial."
