Ed Woodward to discuss European Premier League in crunch Man Utd conference call

Manchester United bigwig Ed Woodward is reportedly set to discuss the idea of a European Premier League with investors on Wednesday.

The bombshell plot of a new FIFA-backed tournament which would involve Europe's biggest clubs emerged on Tuesday.

United, along with Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City and Tottenham, otherwise known as the ‘Big Six’, are the clubs thought to be keen to join.

There would also be sides from France, Germany, Italy and Spain, who are all in talks to become a founder member of the league.

Only five English clubs would be allowed to join initially, meaning one of those interested would have to miss out.

Sky News claim that a £4.6 billion funding package is being assembled to help set up the competition, while a source described it as “potentially the most important development in world club football for decades”.

According to ESPN, it will be a hot topic of debate when United chief executive Woodward speaks to club investors in a conference call.

It’s thought that they are meeting to discuss the effects of the pandemic on their year-end results.

FIFA have played down talk of backing the new competition.

A FIFA spokesperson said: "FIFA does not wish to comment and participate in any speculation about topics which come up every now and then and, for which, institutional structures and regulatory frameworks are well in place at national, European and global level."

Chief executive of the Football Supporters' Association, Kevin Miles, slammed the talk of a European Super League.
