Everton legend Duncan Ferguson leaves position as first-team coach to pursue managerial ambitions as he admits: ‘I need to take that next step in my career’

  • Ferguson served on the backroom staff and had two spells as caretaker boss 

Duncan Ferguson has left Everton to pursue his managerial ambitions, the Premier League club have announced.

The former Toffees captain leaves Goodison Park after serving on the backroom staff to a succession of managers. The Scot also had two spells as caretaker boss.

Ferguson told evertontv: ‘It’s been a massive decision for me, an incredibly difficult one but I need to move on, to take that next step in my career and look for that new challenge. Being a caretaker manager has given me confidence to step into management.’

Ferguson had three spells at Everton as a player, initially joining on loan in 1994 before signing permanently later that year, remaining at Goodison Park until 1998.

The striker also finished his playing career at the Toffees, representing the club between 2000 and 2006.

In February 2014 Ferguson was promoted to the first-team coaching staff at Everton.

He took caretaker charge of the team in 2019 following the dismissal of Marco Silva and did so again earlier this year when Rafa Benitez was sacked.

Last month it was reported that Carlo Ancelotti, who worked with Ferguson at Everton, recommended the 50-year-old for the Blackburn Rovers job.

However, Blackburn ended up appointing Jon Dahl Tomasson.
