Darwin Nunez admits Liverpool’s success under Jurgen Klopp has "surprised" him

Darwin Nunez has admitted that he was “really surprised” to see how impressive Liverpool’s training ground is and how many trophies the club has won recently.

Nunez has now completed aclub-record £85million transferfrom Benfica to Liverpool. The 22-year-old striker will wear the No27 shirt next season for Jurgen Klopp ’s side after signing a long-term contract with the club.

The Uruguay international arrives on Merseyside after scoring an impressive 48 goals across 85 appearances in all competitions for Benfica. Liverpool have paid the Portuguese side and initial fee of £64m, but achievable add-ons in the agreement will see Nunez eclipse Virgil van Dijk, who cost £75m from Southampton, as the club’s record signing.

Nunez knows all about Liverpool, having played against them in the Champions League last season, but he was still taken aback by what he saw at the club’s AXA Training Centre on Tuesday.

“When I arrived at the training ground, I was really surprised to see the set-up and the structure and all the trophies here,” he told theclub website .

“You can then imagine yourself winning more trophies and then later on when you come here again and see the trophies on display, you can say, ‘Look, I was a part of that, I was there at that time, winning trophies.’ That’s one of the reasons why I came here to Liverpool – to win trophies and titles. I want to win a lot of trophies at Liverpool.”

“I’ve played against Liverpool and I’ve seen them in lots of games in the Champions League, and it’s my style of play. There are some great players here and I think it’s going to suit my style of play here.

"As I say, I’ve watched quite a lot and it’s a very big club and I hope I can give everything that I’ve got in order to help the team.”
