Chelsea warned over "deluded" Ronaldo signing as he won’t make starting XI

Former C helsea star Glen Johnson has warned his old club that they'd be "deluded" if they followed through with a deal to sign Cristiano Ronaldo this summer.

Ronaldo is still yet to report to pre-season training with Manchester United, although the club have speculated that it is purely down to 'personal family reasons'. But the 37-year-old has also expressed a desire to leave the club as he wishes to continue playing in the Champions League next season.

United are adamant that Ronaldo is not for sale, and that the striker is in Erik ten Hag's plans for next season. But Chelsea have emerged as a surprise contender to sign the star, with a bid of £14million rumoured as new co-owner Todd Boehly looking to make a statement upon his arrival.

Chelsea may have just agreed to sign Raheem Sterling after loaning out Romelu Lukaku, but he could be joined by Ronaldo with the Blues mulling over a potential bid. A move to Chelsea ticks all the boxes for Ronaldo, who has one year remaining on his United contract.

But former Chelsea star Johnson has told the club they'd be "deluded" if they sign Ronaldo, and even claimed he wouldn't make their starting XI under Thomas Tuchel. Johnson told BettingOdds.com: "I think it depends on the rationale of why you want to sign Cristiano Ronaldo.

"If you’re signing him because you think you’re getting the Ronaldo of old then you’re deluded. But if you’re signing him because he’s a massive commercial deal and you’re going to earn an absolute fortune in shirt sales and sponsorships, then in that sense it’s a clever deal.

Which club will Cristiano Ronaldo be playing for next season? Let us know in the comments section below.

"The only man that can answer that is Boehly himself regarding why he wants to sign him. I know he’s got no experience in football, but people who do buy football clubs are successful at whatever it is they do and they’re clearly intelligent people.

"You don’t buy a football club without a plan. I do believe if they were to buy Ronaldo that it’ll be more from a commercial perspective than getting him into their starting eleven."

United are currently unwilling to sell Ronaldo, and especially not to a Premier league rival. But the Portuguese star could attempt to force through a move, giving Ten Hag a tricky first summer in charge.
