Chelsea Supporters Trust release statement on club’s sale, debt and next owner

The Chelsea Supporters Trust (CST) have "regretfully acknowledged" the decision from Roman Abramovich to sell the club.

The Russian billionaire, 55, has announced his intention to flog the club for the eye-watering price of £3bn after 19 years at the helm.

In a statement on Thursday afternoon, the charitable foundation praised Abramovich for his "unparalleled success".

"The CST would like to express our gratitude to Mr Abramovich for his affection, passion and dedication towards Chelsea FC," reads the announcement.

"His support has brought us unparalleled success during his tenure. Chelsea supporters will never forget all he has done for our club. Thank you, Mr Abramovich."

"The Trust recognises the importance of the unprecedented and generous decision to not ask for any loans made to the club to be repaid and the decision to use the proceeds of the sale in a way that will benefit the victims of war in Ukraine.

"We are deeply saddened and shocked by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent loss of life.

"We stand with the people of Ukraine."

The statement comes in the aftermath of Roman Abramovich's shock announcement that he's putting Chelsea up for sale.

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Chelsea owner has been under intense pressure to relinquish his ownership.

The UK government is eager to perform a nationwide crackdown on high-powered Russian businessmen, though Abramovich is yet to be sanctioned.

The 55-year-old has brought insurmountable success to Stamford Bridge with 17 major honours since taking ownership in 2003.

The CST recognises the new owners face the daunting task of trying to equal his legacy.
