Chelsea hero Petr Cech re-signs at ice hockey team after man of the match debut

Chelsea legend Petr Cech has re-signed with the ice hockey team he made a man-of-the-match debut for.

The former shot-stopper for the Blues and the Gunners joined Guildford Phoenix for the 2019/20 season, the summer after he retired from football at Arsenal.

And he made a big impression, stopping two penalties on his debut as goaltender in a shootout on his debut before making six more appearances, including two shut-outs.

Duties called at Chelsea the following season, though, as Frank Lampard made the club’s technical and performance advisor an inclusion in his 25-man Premier League squad.

With Thomas Tuchel stabling the ship at Stamford Bridge, Cech is now back at Guildford to put on his skates again.

The 39-year-old has been a fan of the sport throughout his life, holding ice hockey legend Dominik Hasek as a role model.

And the goaltender paid tribute to the former NHL player by wearing the same number 39 as him for Guildford.

While Cech also commemorated Hasek on the chin strap of his specially-made helmet, which had the Chelsea and Arsenal badges on it as well as London landmarks.

Speaking ahead of joining the team two years ago, Cech said: "I am delighted to have the opportunity to play with the Phoenix to get the match experience.

"I hope I can help this young team achieve their goals for the season and try to win as many games as possible when I have the chance to play.

"After 20 years of professional football, this is going to be a wonderful experience for me to play the game I loved to watch and play as a kid."

Cech also admitted that he had been preparing for his Guildford ice hockey debut while he was at his Premier League clubs.

Surrey Flames’ coach Paul Dixon said two years ago that the former Czech international had been working on his technique since 2003.

He said: “He has been practising with us for six or seven years but we never told anyone because we were never sure how his clubs would have reacted.

“He is just one of the boys, a really good person, such a nice, down to earth guy.”
