Cardiff City push to sign Gareth Bale as chairman flies in to lead negotiations

Cardiff City are reportedly stepping up their pursuit of Gareth Bale.

The Wales international has just finished his contract with Real Madrid and so now clubs are actively trying to sign him. Surprisingly, it's the Bluebirds who are really making an attempt on the former Tottenham player, with their chairman Mehmet Dalman flying into the UK to begin negotiations for the attacker.

The 32-year-old will be available on a free transfer but his wages might prove a sticking issue. Bale – who won an incredible five Champions League titles with Los Blancos – recently admitted that there are a number of clubs already after his signature. According to the Daily Mail, when he was asked about offers for the next campaign, he replied: “I've got loads!”

BBC Sport report that Cardiff see Bale as an option because they hope he can be the driving factor in returning the club to the Premier League. They hope he may want to stay beyond a single campaign.

However, Cardiff may struggle to persuade the star given their financial capacity. Bale earned £600,000-per-week at Real Madrid – more than they currently pay their entire squad. The same report suggests that Bale is open to taking a huge pay cut to ensure he gets the right job.

Bale recently starred as Wales beat Ukraine 1-0 to confirm their place at the World Cup. Bale said of the huge achievement after the game: “It’s the greatest result in the history of Welsh football. We are all so ecstatic, and we’re going to a World Cup!' Bale said.

“It’s what dreams are made of. It’s what we’ve been working for since we first came together. I’m speechless because we’re so happy. We did it for all our amazing fans and our country. Words can’t describe how we’re feeling at the moment.

“I haven’t done much over the last four weeks because of my back spasm, which everyone knows about, so just happy to get through the game, contribute in whatever way I could. The most important thing was to get through this and to get through to the World Cup.”
