Those who believe in the ‘Drake curse,’ now have a new piece of evidence to point to as proof the curse does in fact exist following Canada’s 1-0 loss to Belgium.

The Canadian national team played their World Cup opener against Belgium Wednesday in Group F but suffered an agonizing defeat despite dominating spells of the game.

Promising left back Alphonso Davies could have handed Canada the opening goal – and its first-ever at a World Cup – with a penalty kick in the 10th minute of the game but he saw it saved by goalkeeper Thibault Courtois.

With the result, Canada became the first World Cup team since 1978 to attempt at least 20 shots and have one penalty kick and still not score a goal.

However, some have claimed the source of the Maple Leafs’ despair is none other than Canadian artist Drake.

The ‘Drake curse’ has shown itself multiple times over the course of various high profile sporting events after a team is publicly backed by the Canadian rapper.

This backing tends to come in the form of either a picture featuring Drake and a prominent member of the team is posted in a picture with Drake, or he post himself wearing the team’s jersey.

Davies also posted a photo with Drake holding to his Instagram story with his national team jersey days before the tournament.

It is also noted that Drake is a noted gambler who has lost big on several recent bets.

Recently he lost over $2 million betting on former UFC champion Israel Adesanya to defend his title against Alex Pereira.

He also recently placed a losing bet of $649,000 on an accumulator featuring Barcelona to win El Clasico against Real Madrid and Arsenal to beat Leeds.

Following the game, the Canadian players drew praise from both the media and their coach.

Canadian manager John Herdman shared a similar reaction to the game during his post-game comments.

‘Good performance from the team. Really proud, really proud,’ said Herdman.

‘I think the fans in the stadium can go away feeling like we’re a football country. They brought their energy for 90 minutes. It felt like we were the home team.’

‘Proper football crowd. And I’m really proud of the lads but at the end of the day we need to get points.’

Canada’s coach John Herdman speaks to his players after the World Cup loss against Belgium

‘We go into this Croatia game with a bit of fire in our belly’s now. We’re hungry, we’re even more hungry. We know we deserve to be here, and it’s time. It’s time for us to push on.’

Fox commentator Alexis Lalas also praised the effort from the Canadians saying

‘They should be incredibly proud of that performance. They were the better team despite the loss.’

‘And ultimately, they got hosed, when it comes to the missed call there.’
