Bruno Fernandes really is the gift that keeps on giving for Manchester United. Not only was his arrival the catalyst for an upturn in results that saved their season last term, but this time around he’s ensured United look stronger than ever in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Fernandes has so often been their saviour in the past 13 months, during a time when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s job has never quite felt secure.

But now the Norwegian, who came close to being dismissed in December following United’s elimination from the Champions League, is overseeing major progress on the field.

United are on course for a second-place finish and while that may not have satisfied demands in Solskjaer’s playing days, there is finally optimism the Red Devils are on the right track.

The Fernandes factor is now imperative to the club’s fortunes, for more reasons than one.

In recent times, United have been conscious of the impact of their waning footballing powers on their recruitment drive and ability to attract top transfer targets.

Even before they landed Fernandes, the player was keen on joining Tottenham but Spurs failed to find an agreement with Sporting.

Now Fernandes provides United with huge pulling power, particularly in one niche market where there is a hotbed of talent.

Portugal appear to have a golden generation on their hands which threatens to only get stronger despite the delivery of two major trophies in 2016 (European Championships) and 2019 (Nations League).

Fernandes is accompanied in Manchester by Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva and Joao Cancelo, who all represent a healthy proportion of City’s potentially title-winning spine.

There’s every chance more Portuguese players could follow their compatriots to England, where there is already a large number of established international players.

United will be keen to exercise their relations with super-agent Jorge Mendes, when looking to recruit this summer.

His Gestifute stable contains a number of potential United transfer targets and a host of players that could tickle the club’s fancy.

One of those is Wolves winger Pedro Neto, who has history with United following a trial in 2016.

The Red Devils decided against signing the young prospect, who has since proved their judgement wrong having impressed with Wolves under Nuno Espirito Santo.

He is deemed one of the brightest U21 talents in Europe and it surely won’t be long until Wolves are braced for offers.

Playing with Fernandes would be the dream for any young Portuguese player and is a similar attraction to playing under legendary manager Jose Mourinho.

That’s where United look set to profit and there is another Mendes client believed to be on their radar.

Eintracht Frankfurt forward Andre Silva has gunned in 19 Bundesliga goals this season in 21 outings and could be available for as cheap as £30m, reports claim with Mendes looking to earn his client a bigger move.

With the long-term future of Edinson Cavani unresolved, the acquisition of Silva – fast approaching his peak – makes perfect sense for United.

There are also signs that United are building for the future, with scouts reportedly keeping tabs on Pedro Goncalves.

The Sporting right-winger has a £52.5m release clause and is now the club’s most valuable asset following the departure of Fernandes.

Following his former team-mate to Old Trafford is a dream move at this stage of his career and he could be at the centre of a tug-of-war in upcoming transfer windows.

Not only is he a world-class talent, but Fernandes has become a major bargaining tool for United and they are set to reap the rewards of that in their quest to reign supreme once again.
