Brighton star Alexis Mac Allister was cruelly denied a Goal of the Season contender by VAR in another contentious overruling by the technology. The Argentinian fired in a thumping 30-yard drive in Brighton’s enthralling Premier League clash with Leicester City, only for the technology to find a tight offside in the build-up.

A Brighton player tried to acrobatically send a Pascal Gross free-kick towards goal but did not make contact with the ball. Leicester cleared the ball from their penalty area and Mac Allister fired a wonderful strike into the top corner.

But it soon became clear that the initial attacker was offside as they tried to steer the ball goalwards. After a long delay, referee Tony Harrington was sent to review the footage and eventually awarded a free kick to Leicester for offside.

Players are deemed to be interfering with play if they are in an offside position and make an attempt to play the ball – even if they do not make contact. It was a harsh but ultimately correct decision by the officials.
